Instructor: Jack Colford
Teaching Assistant: Michael McCulloch
In the last several years there has been an explosion in the number of published meta-analyses in the biomedical literature. The widespread and growing application of meta-analyses to study important research questions makes it useful for most health professionals to be able to understand and critique this research design. This course will provide a detailed examination of the strengths and limitations of the technique as well an intensive introduction into the design and execution of a meta-analysis. Specific topics to be covered (and emphasized through numerous examples from the medical literature) include: identification of research questions appropriate for study using meta-analysis; a critique of the performance of meta-analysis contrasted with randomized, controlled trials; systematic abstraction and quality scoring of data from research articles; selection of a proper statistical model in a meta-analysis, including problem sets with practical examples of fixed and random effects models as well as examples of meta-regression used to evaluate heterogeneity; graphical and tabular templates for the presentation of data from a meta-analysis. Several computerized packages (REVMAN, EPIMETA, and STATA for meta-analysis) will be discussed. Prerequisites: Introductory level courses in epidemiology and biostatistics.
